Headscape Focus wins at Commonwealth Digital Health Awards

We’re delighted to announce that our work with Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust on Headscape Focus has been awarded a Commonwealth Digital Health Award in the Adolescent Health Category.

Headscape Focus is a PHR aimed specifically at children with ADHD as well as their parents and teachers. The platform allows children and their parents to track medications, and provides connection between them, their teachers and their clinicians.

The Commonwealth Digital Health Awards (CWDHA) took place virtually on 28th November, live from Geneva, Switzerland. The CWDHA is a flagship project of the Digital Health Initiative of the Commonwealth Medical Association.

This year’s ceremony was particularly significant as in 2019, the Commonwealth Centre for Digital Health decided to move the awards to Geneva and conduct it alongside the Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting and the World Health Assembly, to give more visibility to award winners on the theme ‘Towards Connected Health’.

The shortlisting and success of our work on Headscape Focus at this year's virtual awards creates excellent awareness of the product among key decision makers, including the Health Ministers of the 53 Commonwealth Countries.

Kumar Jacob, founder and CEO of Mindwave Ventures commented on the award win: “We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the Commonwealth Digital Health Awards, especially in the Adolescent Health Category. It’s an honour to be named amongst so many amazing digital innovations, all aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of people around the world.

“Our recent work on Headscape Focus has been a great success for Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. A bespoke admin portal was required for this project, to internally manage the on-boarding of its users. Having proved the concept and effectiveness of digitally connecting users and clinicians, Oxleas is now working with us to roll out a PHR service to the whole trust.”

Congratulations to the entire team who worked on this bespoke product for Oxleas!

Nominations announced for NHS Excellence in Supply Awards

We are thrilled to announce that we have been nominated for our work with Fortrus at this year’s NHS Excellence in Supply Awards. The awards will recognise the response of the health and care sector to COVID-19 from third-party companies, suppliers and NHS organisations.

This year, the awards will consist of three categories:

  • Fighting the virus, recognising organisations demonstrating innovation in the supply of a product, process or service which directly supported the response of the health and care system to the virus.
  • Supporting the system, recognising organisations demonstrating innovation in supporting, enhancing or transforming existing areas of health and care or services that were impacted by COVID-19.
  • NHS procurement heroes, recognising NHS procurement teams or members of procurement teams who have provided exceptional support to their trust during COVID-19.

Our work for the Alder Hey’s Children’s Hospital has been nominated in the ‘Supporting the system’ category. In order to allow patients to experience their visit remotely before attending appointments, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital partnered us via the Fortrus Digital Transformation Framework to adapt the Alderplay native app into a web-based platform that gives Alder Hey’s young patients a more engaging and less intimidating experience at the hospital.

Using augmented reality, the webapp provides children with a virtual journey throughout the hospital to familiarise them with the facility, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety. This is particularly important now, as social distancing measures have been implemented to minimise risk, meaning patients will have fewer visits and support from the wider family unit.

The awards will be taking place on the 22nd October - Good luck to all those nominated!

How to build a successful mobile application for health research

We know that working with a tech company can be daunting for health researchers; from working out your requirements through to budgeting for a project - there are many things to consider.

With health researchers as an important client group for Mindwave, we are keen to help you understand how to scope in technology when planning a research bid or project. That’s why we offer a one hour mini-workshop to help you clarify your requirements and find out more about the digital design and development process. We can run the workshop via video and we do not charge for our time.

We have recently produced a brochure to give you more information about what we do to support health researchers. You can find it here.

You can also view a webinar we did on the topic here.

“The webinar was great! It brought the whole process to life. It was really useful to have the worked example and I thought it was refreshing to hear the reflections about how the partners had navigated some of the challenges that the project threw up and encouraging to learn about how you had put solutions in place. There was also lots of practical information around how many users you need to build a user profile which is helpful for costing and the info on data protection is also really helpful for developing applications. Definitely a must see for people like me who are thinking about doing something like this for the first time!”  Christine, health researcher at the University of Cambridge

Bending the Curve - future of digital mental health post Covid-19 - webinar recording

Our Bending the Curve webinar took place on 2 June, with a panel of expert speakers, including people with lived experience, CCIOs, clinicians, academics, designers and technologists.

The webinar a chance to hear from leading thinkers and doers in the field about what the future might hold for digital mental health during and beyond Covid-19 pandemic.

We considered what we may want to leverage and what we may want to return to post-Covid. We will think about the future that we aspire to and concerns we may have about possible scenarios we want to avoid.

You can find a recording of the webinar here.

One of our panellists, John Torous, was unable to attend the webinar but kindly agreed to do an interview with me instead. You can find the 15 minute video here.

We will be writing up the key themes into a white paper and will share them with you in due course.

“What a fabulous line up you managed to pull together for your ‘bending the curve’ webinar. Really stimulating and thought provoking discussion from the panel and input from other attendees in the chat. Thank you. Let’s hope that together, with some great minds like these, we can find a way forward and through covid-19 that takes us to a 'new normal’ where digital technologies are embedded in services so effectively that we no longer talk about ‘digital’ as something separate in mental health."

Mindwave partners with Medwise.ai to create question answering platform for health care professionals during COVID-19

Mindwave has partnered with Accelerate Cambridge and DigitalHealth. London launchpad company Medwise.ai to launch an AI-powered platform that answers COVID-19 questions for healthcare professionals.

The start-up was selected from over 8600 applicants to receive funding by the UK government, as part of its £40 million investment to boost cutting-edge technological advances, particularly as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Medwise.ai uses natural language processing technology to help clinicians find answers faster than ever before. The artificial intelligence platform aggregates information from academic journal articles and national guidelines to provide healthcare professionals with the latest information on COVID-19 in a fast and concise format.

A beta version of the platform has launched for public testing and the service will be free to NHS workers.

The free, not-for-profit service will be available to anyone working in the health sector including junior doctors, GPs, hospital workers and clinicians working outside of their specialist areas.

The Mindwave Ventures team will work with Medwise.ai to further improve the design, performance and scalability of the platform.

Dr. Keith Tsui, CEO and co-founder of Medwise.ai said: “Although the number of new COVID-19 cases and the number of deaths is falling in the UK, the knowledge we have about the virus and the disease keeps increasing and it's nearly impossible to keep up with the latest developments. We need to equip health care workers with the latest evidence and guidance, so COVID-19 patients get the best care possible.

“We are very grateful to be funded by Innovate UK and to work with Mindwave Ventures and our other partners who have made the launch possible. We encourage as many professions to use the platform as possible as this will allow more data to be gathered, which will allow improvements to both the AI algorithm and the user interface.”

Dr. Victoria Betton, CInO at Mindwave Ventures said: “The global pandemic has created an urgency to get the most up to date evidence fast. With advice and guidelines changing so quickly as the medical world learns more about the virus, it is important that health professionals can make sense of it to work as effectively as possible. We are thrilled to partner with Medwise.ai and help create an innovative and useful digital health platform”.

Medwise.ai is proudly supported by Panacea Star, Accelerate Cambridge, Eastern AHSN, DigitalHealth.London, MedTech Foundation, and EIT Health

About the Event:

Isolate but don’t be isolated. Remote Rituals - Mental Wellbeing while staying at HomeStay Home, Stay Safe, Stay Sane, Stay Connected.

As part of Leeds Digital Festival, the OHT team in Leeds have teamed up with the OHT Midlands Hub Lead and Head of Healthcare at BJSS, Lauren Bevan to host a collaborative session to discuss, share and support the current mental and wellbeing issues that have arisen since the start of covid19. She will be joined by Roz Davies of mHabitat, Dr Victoria Betton of Mindwave Ventures and Sarah Tulip from WiLD for an informal speaker round table and panel discussion.

The Covid-19 pandemic poses a threat to both our physical and mental health. The things we know to be good for managing our mental health like getting outside and staying connected have suddenly become more difficult to maintain. Taking care of your mind as well as your body is really important while staying at home during the coronavirus outbreak.

We will delve in to how Mindwave are adapting as an SME both to work effectively together and support their teams mental health and wellbeing and to support their clients and their changing requirements during the pandemic, how mHabitat (hosted by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) continue to support the co-design of digitally enabled innovation and inclusion in health and social care and how Sarah is adapting to lockdown (and dealing with the many challenges) as a working single mum who does a lot to support the tech community and well as lead on digital innovation at EY. Whether you're social distancing or self-isolating you may be feeling anxious or stressed during this time, and that's completely normal. There are simple steps you can take to look after your mental health and wellbeing.

We would love you to join us for an evening of discussion, sharing ideas, a chinwag (and optional glass of wine) about how technology and the virtual community can help you with your physical and mental health and hopefully provide some optimism on the future for this group.
